Andrew N Barnett was the second son of John M and Elizabeth R Barnett to survive to adulthood. According to the Skidmore Bible, Andrew was born December 22, 1837. As mentioned on the page about Moore Barnett, Andrew's place of birth is recorded as Mississippi in some documents, and Tennessee in others.

We know nothing of Andrew's whereabouts between 1850, when he was enumerated in Elijah Skidmore's household, and October 30, 1861, when he enlisted as a private in Company E, 19 (Dawson's) Arkansas Infantry (Confederate), in Rocky Comfort, Arkansas. He was 23 years old when he enlisted.

Andrew was captured at Fort Hindman, Arkansas Post, on January 11, 1863. His name appears on a Roll of Prisoners of War at Camp Douglas, Illinois, dated February 8, 1863. He was paroled on April 2, 1863, and delivered at City Point, Virginia, on April 10, 1863.

After his release, Andrew, who also went by the name Andy in the military, returned to his unit. In May 1864, he was charged 60 cts for loss of ordnance stores. At one point during the war, so the story passed down in the family goes, Andrew got shot in the leg. The man who shot him was hiding behind a tree, but Andrew saw him and shot back, killing him. Then, on his way back to headquarters, Andrew got really thirsty, so he drank some water out of a creek. After following the creek upstream for a bit, he came across a dead, maggot-covered horse lying in the water… and Andrew didn't get thirsty any more that day.

Andrew left the service at Greensboro, North Carolina, in April 1865. Six months later, on November 2, he married Margaret Ann Isabella Anderson* in Sevier County, Arkansas.

Andrew and Margaretann were enumerated in the 1880 and 1900 censuses in Little River County, Arkansas. Andrew's name (A N Barnett) appears on the Little River County Tax List of 1868. We have not found the family in the 1870 census. It is possible that they were living in what is now Oklahoma during that time, as Little River County lies on the state border.

In 1889, Andrew obtained 174.8 acres of land south of present-day Winthrop, Arkansas, in Section 18, Township 11S, Range 31W. Andrew and Margaretann may have lived there until Andrew died in September 1901.

Andrew is probably buried in Campground Cemetery, in Winthrop, Arkansas, but we have found no documentation for that. Margaret died August 5, 1929. According to her obituary, she was buried in Campground Cemetery. There is no marker for her grave, although it is likely near that of her grandson, John Lawson Bush.

Andrew and Margaret had the following children:

  • Roxanna Barnett (also spelled Rockanna), born 18 September 1867. She married David Taylor (John) Bush, December 1882.
  • Zachariah Nathaniel Barnett, born 30 October 1869. He married Martha Ellen Morgan (born December 11, 1869) on 27 December 1889.
  • M. Elizabeth Barnett, born 22 May 1872 (recorded as M E in the Bible; she is called Elizabeth in the 1880 census) She is possibly the M E Burnett who married W B West in 1889 (Little River County, AR, Book B2, page 214), since Wm B West signed as security for Zachariah Barnett's marriage to Martha Ellen Morgan in 1889. In 1891, M E West married James Hall, (Little River County Book B2, page 477). We do not have copies of either of these documents yet.
  • Thomas J Barnett, born 9 November 1876; died 27 October 1890. (recorded as T J in the Bible; he is called Thomas in the 1880 census.)
  • James Wesley Barnett, born 2 May 1879 (recorded as J A W in the Bible). He married Mrs Susie Honnell, 27 September 1911.
  • H L, born October 1881; died 7 October 1890. We have no further information on this child.
  • Mallessa Ozella Barnett, born 11 March 1886 (recorded as M O in the Bible.) She married J S Stuart on March 10, 1901. She married John J Risinger about 1907. She died December 10, 1963, in Lamar County, Texas.

*Margaret's name had many different forms and spellings. In the marriage record at the Sevier County Courthouse, it's "Margretann Isablah Anderson." In the 1860 census, it's "Isabellah." In 1880, the enumerator didn't even attempt to spell her name, listing only "Barnet" on that line. In 1900, her name is spelled "Isabelle." In her obituary, her name was given as "Margaret Isabella Barnett." According to the Arkansas Death Index, it was "Margaret Ann Barnett." The confusion is compounded by the fact that in 1911, several years after Andrew died, Margaret married Henry Ward; her name is spelled "Issobell," "Issabell," "Isabell," and "Isabel" on that single document alone.
